High Turnover of MPs in Parliament is a Concern, Says Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed worry over the significant rate at which Members of Parliament (MPs) are leaving their positions, urging political parties to take the matter seriously.

During the recent primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), 28 MPs failed to secure their return, while 17 MPs from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lost during the party’s primaries last year. Additionally, 5 MPs from the NDC and 19 from the NPP voluntarily chose not to seek reelection.

This sudden shift in parliamentary composition has sparked concerns about Ghana’s democratic progress and the stability of the legislative body.

In his welcome address on the parliamentary floor, Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of both individual competence and party endorsement in parliamentary roles.

He called on all stakeholders to consider the significant turnover and its financial implications, noting the substantial investment made in each MP, which should not be squandered every four years.
