Security has been significantly heightened in the Ablekuma North Constituency as officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) set up to conduct the parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025.
The rerun comes after a prolonged electoral dispute following the December 7, 2024, general election, which left the constituency without parliamentary representation due to unresolved results in several polling stations.
On the morning of the rerun, there was a notable police presence across key areas of the constituency, particularly at locations previously identified as flashpoints. Officers were deployed in large numbers to maintain law and order and reassure voters of their safety.
One of the most closely monitored areas is the St. Peter Society Methodist Church, which served as the collation centre during the 2024 elections. That process ended in disorder, with reports of property damage and confrontations. As a result, the church has denied EC officials access to its auditorium for this rerun, citing the chaos and destruction from the previous poll.
Speaking to the public’s concerns over the security of the exercise, Minister for Defence Dr. Omane Boamah confirmed that there would be no military deployment during the election. He emphasized that the Ghana Police Service is fully in charge of maintaining peace and security throughout the voting process.
“There will be no military deployment,” Dr. Boamah assured. “The Ghana Police Service is trained to handle electoral security, and we trust them to ensure a peaceful and democratic exercise.”
The two main contenders in the rerun are Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Both candidates have expressed confidence in their chances ahead of the vote, which is expected to be closely contested.
Today’s rerun is intended to resolve the legal and administrative impasse that has left the seat vacant for over seven months. The Electoral Commission and security agencies have reiterated their commitment to a free, fair, and transparent process as voters head to the polls.
