Ghanaian singer and songwriter Francisca Gawugah, popularly known as Sista Afia, has expressed her frustration at Ghana music awards for not receiving any nomination for her song “Asuoden” in 2021. The song, which featured Kuami Eugene, was a hit in Ghana, but it failed to secure a nomination at the prestigious awards ceremony that year.
In a post on Facebook, Sista Afia alleged that some artists who did not even file for nominations were able to secure nominations, while her efforts were overlooked. She lamented the lack of recognition for her hard work in the Ghanaian music industry, stating, “The downplay on my efforts ever since I started doing music in Ghana hasn’t been fair to my craft. And yes, it hurts because I work so hard. I’ve been quiet for so long because I have respect for the scheme and I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes!”
The post sparked a wave of support from her fans and followers on social media, who commended her for her hard work and encouraged her to continue making good music regardless of awards. One user wrote, “Awards mean nothing in the Ghana music industry. Follow the steps of Shatta Wale. Keep doing good music and forget about Ghana Music Awards.”
Another user praised Sista Afia’s talent, stating, “Dear Sista Afia, you’re doing incredibly well. All I see in you is a rare gem. You don’t have a contender. The street has given you thumbs up for all the bangers you keep dropping. Awards are mostly subjective and biased. The popularity you’ve gained through your hard work and good songs is the real nomination and award.”
Sista Afia’s post comes on the heels of similar sentiments expressed by Ghanaian rapper Amerado Burner, who also expressed disappointment at not receiving a nomination for his song “Kweku Ananse (original)” at the recently concluded 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards nominations.
