Has Going To The Mountain Become A Fashion?- Pastor Emmanuel Temda

In the Bible, mountains are often the places where God encountered people, changed their lives and sent them back with prophetic messages and directions.

In the bible, mountains are often the places where God encountered people, changed their lives and sent them back with prophetic messages and directions.

The bible records mountain top experiences where significant encounters of manifestations prevailed. Jesus was transfigured to Peter, James and John on “a high mountain” while Moses and Elijah conferred with Jesus.

It was on Mount Horeb that God spoke to Moses from the burning bush sending him to Pharaoh to bring his people, the Israelites out of Egypt.

At Mount Sinai, Moses encountered God for 40 days. His face so radiated and sparkled that he had to cover it with a veil to enable him speak to the Israelites who could not look at the glory which beheld him.

It stands to reason therefore, that mountains have been sacred places of religious pilgrims where people sought the face of God.
“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully”. (Psalm 24:3-4)

However, there is a generation of believers who have thrown that sacredness to the dogs. They go to the mountains, take pictures of themselves, selfies, do face book live videos in a fashionable way and display it on social media as if going there is more of a trend than a religious obligation. I wonder what their motives are in the first place and whether they really have the time to spend on quality prayers on the mountains.

Is it not a wise thing to go to the mountain top, give God the heart of your time, return quietly than go and expose yourself to the world for all kinds of eyes to see?

The question that I want to pose is this: Do they go there just to expose themselves for all to see and know that they are there? What purpose does that serve? Such ‘showboyism’ is not only a carnal thing, but negates every spiritual import of the spiritual exercise.
It is not surprising therefore that we go there and come empty and dry, devoid of mountain top experiences.

It must be pointed out that going to the mountains is not an exercise of “showing off” or a fashion. Those who have made that their agenda are engaging in an exercise of futility. It must be on a spiritual retreat, an encounter with God sacredly so that God who sees all things in secret will reward with a blessing.

Let us change our attitudes towards spiritual things. The things of God are for serious minded Christians and must be tackled as such.

We seem to have lost our first love, that serious passion for God, where we return from his presence so uplifted and blessed.

O what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood

Praising my saviour all the day long”
