Guru Disqualified from UGSRC Presidential Race

Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known as Guru in the Ghanaian music industry, has been disqualified from running in the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections. The UGSRC Vetting Committee announced the decision on August 11, 2024, following a thorough vetting process.

Guru, who had teamed up with Jeffery Adu-Yeboah as his running mate, failed to meet the necessary qualifications as stipulated by the UGSRC Constitution. The committee found that both Guru and another aspirant, Lawrence Edinam Egleh, were non-residents of any hall of residence at the university. This is a direct violation of Article 30(1)(a) of the UGSRC Constitution, which requires candidates for executive office to qualify as Executive Officers of their respective halls of residence.

The vetting report highlighted that to be eligible for an Executive Officer position within the UGSRC, a candidate must first meet the criteria to hold a similar position within their hall of residence. As non-residents, neither Guru nor Egleh fulfilled this requirement, leading to their disqualification.

This disqualification marks a significant blow to Guru, who had aimed to transition from his successful music career to student leadership at the University of Ghana. The decision has sparked conversations among the student body about the stringent vetting process and the constitutional demands placed on candidates.

Despite Guru’s disqualification, the UGSRC elections are expected to proceed later this year, with other qualified presidential and vice-presidential candidates ramping up their campaigns. The remaining candidates who successfully passed the vetting process include Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah & Lawrence Edinam Egich, Emmanuel Mensah & Justice Mbawin Abugri, Nil Afotey Odai & Abigail Ohenewaa Addai, and Blessing Mantey & Martin Agbefia.
