The Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has issued a press release announcing their intention to stage a demonstration in Accra on Wednesday, September 28. This protest is in response to the prolonged delays in disbursing bursaries and thesis grants to its members.
Initially, the association had planned to hold a picket at the Flagstaff House. However, they decided to postpone it with the hope of engaging in discussions with the government regarding their concerns. Unfortunately, according to the President of GRASAG, Rashid Kwesi Etuaful, the government has not adequately addressed their issues. Meetings with both the Ministry of Education and the Scholarship Secretariat have proven unproductive.
The scheduled demonstration on Wednesday will witness hundreds of graduate students marching from Obra Spot, proceeding through Nkrumah Avenue, Farisco Traffic Light, Kinbu SHS, Tema Station, Atta Mills High Street, and concluding at Hearts of Oak Park (Art Centre). Here, the association plans to hold a press conference before submitting a petition to both the Ministry of Finance and the President through the Chief of Staff.
The full statement from GRASAG indicates their determination to proceed with the demonstration on September 28, 2016, as originally communicated. Members are urged to assemble at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, at 7:30 am, dressed in black or red attire or any attire with a GRASAG insignia. The GRASAG National President will address the gathering before the march.
