The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has disclosed that one of the containers used to transport the nine buses procured by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for Division One League clubs contained over 30 mattresses, bringing the total expenditure for that container to GHC 356,380.33.
It remains unclear whether the mattresses were meant for the refurbished Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence or another purpose. Additionally, it is not yet known if the other eight containers used to deliver the buses also contained mattresses or other items.
Last week, JoySports reported that the GFA had purchased nine buses for GHC 5.1 million—approximately GHC 575,000 per bus. Some of these buses, cleared by Freightgistics Ghana Company Ltd., had not yet been registered due to missing documentation, leaving clubs frustrated.
One of the buses, allocated to Hohoe United, was reportedly driven straight to a mechanic shop in Avenor, Accra, raising further concerns about the state of the vehicles.
Initial reports indicated that the “used Hyundai County bus” arrived with additional items that were not readily identifiable. However, following a request from JoySports journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, the GRA confirmed that medium-sized and student mattresses were among the imported goods.
