Alexander Akwasi Acquah, the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, has called on the government to prioritize funding for the Free Senior High School (SHS) program in the upcoming 2025 budget.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP stressed the importance of sustaining and increasing investment in the Free SHS initiative to ensure its continued success and to support students and their families.

“It will be one of the serious issues for the government to do, to cut investment in Free SHS. We have done our best, and we expect that they must continue so that at least we have dedicated funding for this Free SHS program so that we don’t see our people demanding food from their parents here and there,” Acquah stated.

He emphasized that adequate financial support is necessary to maintain the program’s effectiveness, ensuring students have access to essential resources without placing a financial burden on their families.

“We expect that the government does a lot of allocation to the Free SHS Secretariat,” he added.

The Free SHS program, a flagship policy of the NPP government, has provided free secondary education to thousands of Ghanaian students. However, concerns over funding constraints have raised questions about its sustainability, prompting calls from various stakeholders for continued investment.
