The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has strongly criticized the government for introducing a new GH₵1 levy on petroleum products without consulting key industry stakeholders.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday, the GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Alhaji Abass Imoro, described the levy as a harsh and untimely blow to commercial drivers, particularly following a recent 15% reduction in transport fares.

“We are not clear with their explanation. One cedi per litre is no small money,” Alhaji Imoro said. “We just reduced our lorry fares in good faith, thinking the appreciation of the cedi and falling fuel prices would bring some relief—only to wake up to another tax.”

The levy was approved under the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and is expected to generate an estimated GH₵5.7 billion annually. The government says the revenue will go toward settling the over $3 billion debt in the energy sector and ensuring reliable fuel supply for power generation.

But the GPRTU insists the decision lacked transparency and failed to include those most affected.

“We believe we should have been part of the conversation,” Imoro stated. “One cedi per litre means a lot to professional drivers. This is not something we can take lightly.”

The union says it is currently assessing the full impact of the levy on transport operations and will take a final stance after conducting internal consultations.
