The Government of Ghana has announced plans to recruit 7,000 teachers nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s education system and address persistent staffing shortages in schools.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a media briefing on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
According to the Minister, the recruitment process will officially begin on April 10, 2026, when the application portal is opened to qualified applicants across the country.
He disclosed that the recruitment has received the necessary financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance, ensuring a smooth and transparent process.
“We will be recruiting at least 7,000 teachers. We want the process to be open, transparent, and competitive,” he stated.
The exercise will target graduates from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 cohorts, offering them an opportunity to secure placement within the public education system.
Priority, however, will be given to applicants who are willing to accept postings to underserved and deprived communities, where the shortage of teachers remains a major challenge.
The initiative is expected not only to create employment opportunities for thousands of trained teachers but also to improve the equitable distribution of educators across the country.
In recent years, disparities in teacher deployment have raised concerns, with urban areas experiencing a surplus of educators while rural communities continue to struggle with inadequate staffing.
Government officials believe the new recruitment drive will help bridge this gap and enhance the quality of education nationwide.
