The Government of Ghana, through the Attorney-General’s Department, is working in coordination with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to initiate the extradition of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, from the United States.
Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, confirmed in an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, June 12, that legal processes are actively underway to bring the former minister back to Ghana to face investigations.
“There must be a specific extradition process that allows us to trigger international legal assistance to arrest and return individuals for prosecution,” Dr. Srem Sai stated. “That is the job of the Attorney-General—to oversee and implement this process.”
He emphasized, “We are currently taking steps to extradite him from wherever he is.”
Mr. Ofori-Atta is reportedly in the U.S. awaiting cancer surgery at the Mayo Medical Clinic, scheduled for June 13, 2025. However, the government is proceeding with its extradition efforts despite his health condition.
The former Finance Minister is under investigation by the Special Prosecutor for alleged corruption and procurement breaches committed during his time in office.
