The Director of Urban Roads, Ing. James Amoo-Gottfried, has assured Ghanaians of the government’s commitment to maintaining the newly inaugurated Flower Pot Interchange. The interchange, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility in the Greater Accra Region, was officially commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, November 19.
The GH¢677.8 million project has sparked concerns about its maintenance and the potential misuse of the spaces around it. Addressing these issues, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, warned against the emergence of unauthorized structures such as kiosks and hawker stalls, emphasizing that these could detract from the interchange’s functionality and aesthetics.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show, Ing. Amoo-Gottfried outlined the government’s measures to ensure the interchange’s upkeep and effective utilization. He revealed that the project is entering a one-year defect notification period, during which the contractor is responsible for addressing any issues at no additional cost. Beyond this period, a maintenance plan will be implemented to handle potential defects.
To deter unauthorized activities and optimize the use of spaces beneath the interchange, Ing. Amoo-Gottfried disclosed that advertisements had been placed in newspapers to attract private managers interested in overseeing the space. The goal is to activate these areas positively and ensure they are used in line with permissible purposes.
“We have created ample spaces underneath the interchange that we want to utilize meaningfully,” he said. “We are seeking private partners to manage these areas and maintain them effectively.”
