The Government of Ghana has announced that the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy will be extended to include private schools starting from the next academic year.

This major policy shift was revealed during the launch of revised school selection guidelines for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. Under the new arrangement, candidates will now be allowed to choose seven schools instead of the previous six, with the selection period set from May 27 to June 6.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Appak, made the announcement at a press briefing on Tuesday. He explained that the move aims to expand access, reduce pressure on public schools, and gradually phase out the double-track system.

“As part of our campaign promise, we’ve engaged stakeholders and are confident that private schools are ready to deliver,” Dr. Appak said. “This will help us create more space and ultimately eliminate the double-track system.”
