The announcement was made on May 28, 2025, by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the inauguration of the university’s new Governing Council in Accra.

The late President Mills, who passed away in office in 2012, spearheaded the establishment of UHAS in 2011 to train skilled health professionals. Since then, the university has grown into a leading institution in public health, medicine, nursing, and allied sciences.

Chair of the Governing Council, Prof. Kodzo Gavua, called the renaming “symbolic and appropriate,” urging all stakeholders to uphold the values of discipline, service, and scholarship championed by Mills.
