The Ghanaian government has announced plans to construct 1,000 housing units to provide relief for those affected by the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage. Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, made the announcement during a press conference on September 30, 2024, reaffirming the government’s commitment to easing the hardships faced by displaced individuals.
Phase one of the project, consisting of 115 housing units, is already 60% complete. Additionally, phase two has been approved, adding 1,010 more units. The government is in the final stages of securing approvals from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and completing land acquisition for this second phase.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which occurred in October 2023, displaced around 88,000 people and destroyed over 5,000 homes along the Lower Volta Basin. Nearly a year later, many victims are still without permanent housing, but the government is working to address this urgent need.
