The family of a 15-year-old boy who reportedly died by suicide while in police custody is demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, identified as Simon Obeng, was being held at the Tarkwa-Simpa Police Station after being arrested on June 5, 2025. His arrest followed a complaint by his employer, who accused him of stealing gold. He was placed in custody pending further investigation.

On June 8, police informed the family that Obeng had allegedly hanged himself inside the police cells. A video circulating on social media showed the boy hanging by a rope tied to the metal gate of the cell. The incident has raised concerns and suspicions among family members, prompting calls for clarity and accountability.

Family sources claim that a day before the incident, efforts were made by the employer and a foreman to secure Obeng’s bail, but the police reportedly declined the request, citing lateness. The following day, the family was informed of the alleged suicide.

The family has expressed doubts over the official narrative, particularly noting inconsistencies related to cellmate movements and alleged denial of access during the bail process. They have also disputed claims that a suicide note was left behind, where the deceased supposedly stated he was 18 years old, rather than 15.

As of now, the Ghana Police Service has not issued an official statement addressing the family’s concerns or providing additional details about the case. The family is urging the government to launch an independent investigation to ensure justice and transparency.
