The government is set to provide a formal update on the National Cathedral project and related developments following public debate and speculation surrounding the project’s future.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications, announced via Facebook on Friday, July 18, that he will hold a press briefing at 4 p.m. to speak on the National Cathedral and “matters arising.”

“I will hold a press briefing at 4 p.m. on the National Cathedral and matters arising. Stay tuned,” the minister stated.

The announcement comes in the wake of growing concerns over reports that the land initially designated for the Cathedral could be repurposed as a Cultural Convention Centre.

The Board of Directors of the National Cathedral of Ghana has publicly opposed any such move. In a statement released after an emergency meeting on July 7, the Board said it had not received any official communication about a change in plans but found it necessary to address the ongoing reports.

The board reaffirmed its commitment to the Cathedral project, emphasizing the spiritual and national significance the project holds. The upcoming press briefing is expected to clarify the government’s current position and future direction regarding the controversial project, which has faced delays, funding concerns, and mixed public reactions.

The National Cathedral project, first announced in 2018, was intended to serve as a national place of worship and a symbol of unity. However, it has since become a subject of public scrutiny due to issues around transparency, land use, and financial management.
