The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has reopened the sea to artisanal fishers as of August 1, following a month-long closure intended to replenish fish stocks.
A ceremony at Akplabanya Beach in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region marked the reopening. The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, officially declared the sea open and urged stakeholders to support marine conservation efforts.
“This closure is a strategy to aid the recovery of over-exploited fisheries, rebuild depleted fish species, and reduce fishing pressure,” Koomson said. “I encourage the people of Upper Manya in Ada West to dedicate themselves to conserving our marine resources. May this season bring abundant catches and prosperity in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.”
