The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has recovered the lifeless body of a young man from a drainage channel at Asylum Down in the Greater Accra Region.
According to a statement issued by the service, the incident was reported in the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The GNFS said it received a distress call at approximately 6:18 a.m., prompting an immediate response.
Swift Emergency Response
A rescue team from the Circle Fire Station, led by Richard Helegbe, was dispatched to the scene—a drainage channel connected to the Odaw River, located opposite the Iran Clinic.
Upon arrival, the team conducted a retrieval operation and successfully recovered the body of an unidentified male believed to be in his late 20s.
Police Begin Investigations
The body has since been handed over to the police for preservation and further investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to establish the identity of the deceased.
Authorities have not yet disclosed additional details, but investigations are ongoing.
The incident adds to growing concerns about safety around open drainage systems in parts of Accra, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.
