The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly denounced the reported assault on Dokurugu Abubakar Ndeeya, a reporter for Zaa Multimedia, by individuals believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to Zaa Multimedia’s management, the journalist was violently attacked on Thursday, May 16, 2024, while attempting to video an altercation between some NPP supporters and a police officer.
While documenting this event, the reporter was viciously attacked by four individuals thought to be NPP supporters.
In a statement dated Monday, May 20, and signed by Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, the Northern Regional Chairman of the GJA, the association urged all leaders, especially politicians, to join them in unequivocally condemning attacks on journalists.
The statement also called on the police to take immediate action. “The GJA hereby urges the Northern Regional Police Command to utilize all lawful means to apprehend those responsible for this assault on our colleague and ensure they are fully prosecuted.”
The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting journalists in the region, enabling them to perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
