The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 25 bags of cocoa beans into Togo through the Kauk-Jago border in the Bunkpurugu enclave of the North East Region.
The cocoa beans, suspected to have been transported from southern Ghana by a smuggling syndicate, were intercepted following a tip-off. Acting swiftly, GIS officers laid an ambush along the unapproved route at the border and successfully seized the smuggled goods. The suspects, however, managed to flee the scene before arrest.
Confirming the incident to Graphic Online, the Bunkpurugu Sector Commander of GIS, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI) Edwin Adjetey Doku, said the confiscated goods have been handed over to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as investigations continue.
“We acted on credible intelligence about cocoa beans being smuggled from the Kauk-Jago area into Togo. My team quickly mobilised and intercepted the goods, although the drivers and two other individuals escaped,” ACI Doku explained.
He stressed GIS’s ongoing commitment to securing Ghana’s borders and curbing cross-border criminal activities. He also called on the public to support the service by reporting any suspicious movements or activities.
ACI Doku further appealed for enhanced logistical support, noting that the Bunkpurugu Division is grappling with limited resources in its efforts to clamp down on rising cases of smuggling.
“The Bunkpurugu Division urgently needs more resources to fight the persistent smuggling of goods across our borders,” he stated.
