Ghana’s Road Sector Needs Over GH¢2 Billion for Rehabilitation – Construction Chamber

The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI) has indicated that addressing the challenges confronting the country’s road sector will necessitate an investment of no less than GH¢2 billion. According to Emmanuel Cherry, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber, the GH¢150 million allocated by the government for nationwide pothole patching is woefully inadequate.

In an interview with Citi News, Cherry emphasized the urgency of increased funding from the Ministry of Roads and Highways, citing the escalating costs of materials essential for road maintenance. He asserted, “You don’t need anything less than GH¢2 billion as we speak because the entire roads in the country have been neglected for years and then the potholes have now degenerated into manholes and so the amount of money that could have been used two years ago to fix the same stretch of roads, that amount is no longer going to fix that same stretch because the prices of goods and services are no longer the same.”

Moreover, the CEO criticized the former Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta, for his perceived lack of transparency and limited engagement with stakeholders in decision-making processes. Cherry highlighted the importance of inclusivity in governance, contrasting Atta’s approach unfavorably with that of his predecessor, whom he praised for being more open to input from various quarters.
