All African Games 2023: Ghana’s Black Satellites Secure Top Spot in Group A with Victory over Gambia

In a thrilling encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium, Ghana’s Black Satellites showcased their prowess by defeating Gambia 3-1, propelling them to the summit of Group A in the ongoing 13th African Games Men’s Football competition.

The match was filled with excitement from the onset, with both teams displaying relentless attacking intent. However, it was Ghana who drew first blood when Aziz Misibau capitalized on a defensive error by the Gambian goalkeeper, slotting home in the 13th minute to give his team the lead.

Entering the second half with a one-goal advantage, Ghana continued to dominate proceedings. Abdul Aziz Issah extended their lead with a well-placed shot early in the second half, leaving Gambia’s goalkeeper Sanyang with no chance.

Despite Ghana’s relentless pressure, Gambia’s goalkeeper denied Misibau from the penalty spot in the 74th minute, keeping his team’s hopes alive. However, Gambia managed to pull one back in the dying minutes of the game.

But any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Ghana’s substitute Jerry Afriyie unleashed a spectacular strike, securing a convincing 3-1 victory for his team.

With this result, Ghana now sits atop Group A with four points. Benin and Congo follow closely with two points each, occupying second and third place respectively.

Looking ahead, the Black Satellites will face Benin in their final group stage match on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the Legon Sports Stadium. The match is scheduled to kick off at 5pm, coinciding with the Group A fixture between Congo and Gambia. Ghana will aim to maintain their winning momentum as they seek to secure their spot in the knockout stages of the tournament.
