Authorities in Nigeria have launched an investigation into a burglary at the official residence of Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, located in the high-security Maitama district of Abuja. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 11, and involved the theft of several valuables including plasma television sets, gas cylinders, and bags of rice.

According to reports by Punch Nigeria and confirmed by Ghanaian and Nigerian officials, the unidentified intruders gained access to the residence by cutting through the protective wire atop the perimeter fence. They then forced entry into the house through the back door.

A domestic staff member present at the time recounted the events that led to the discovery of the break-in. “Around 2 a.m., there was a power outage, and I went to the back to switch on the generator. Electricity returned after about 10 minutes, so I turned it off again,” the staff member explained. “Around 5 a.m., I noticed an open window and found one of the burglar-proof rods had been removed. The back door was also open, and the wires on the fence had been cut.”

After making the discovery, the staff member alerted the police officer stationed at the residence. An assessment of the scene revealed that the burglars had taken two plasma TVs, gas cylinders, and two bags of rice.

The incident has since sparked security concerns about the protection of diplomatic residences in Nigeria’s capital. A section of the perimeter fence at the ambassador’s home has been cordoned off with police crime scene tape, signaling the start of forensic investigations.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the burglary and noted that police investigations are ongoing. “It was a burglary issue that happened last week. The police have started investigation,” he said.
