Ghanaians Protest at UN Headquarters, Demand Release of Democracy Hub Activists

A group of Ghanaians gathered at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, demanding the release of protestors from the Democracy Hub who were recently remanded by the Ghanaian authorities. The protestors were arrested following a demonstration against illegal mining (galamsey) on September 21, 2024, in Accra.

The Democracy Hub activists had called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take stronger measures to halt illegal mining, which threatens Ghana’s water bodies and forests. However, clashes with police during the protest led to the arrest of over 40 individuals, with 39 being remanded on September 24 and 11 more the following day.

In solidarity, Ghanaians in the U.S. have urged the international community to pressure the Ghanaian government to release the detained activists and address the environmental issues caused by illegal mining.
