Ghanaians are voting today, December 7, 2024, to elect a new President and Members of Parliament. Polling stations across the country are open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with over 18 million registered voters expected to cast their ballots at 40,967 polling stations.
In a nationwide address on December 6, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo encouraged citizens to vote peacefully, cooperate with the Electoral Commission (EC) and security agencies, and uphold Ghana’s reputation for democratic elections.
“The flame of freedom needs to be protected and constantly refueled. Ghana is known to be the beacon of democracy on the African continent. We should be justly proud of this and do everything we can to protect it,” he remarked.
As part of measures to ensure the integrity of the elections, Interior Minister Henry Quartey announced the temporary closure of all land borders. This directive took effect immediately and will remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on December 8, 2024.
The race for the presidency is primarily between Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
