The Government of Ghana has announced plans to honour astronaut Christina Hammock Koch for her role in the historic Artemis II mission, citing her achievements and her connection to the country.
In a statement shared on April 12, 2026, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa congratulated the Artemis II crew for completing what he described as a groundbreaking and inspiring mission.
He revealed that arrangements are being made through diplomatic channels for President John Dramani Mahama to officially honour Koch on behalf of the Ghanaian people at a mutually agreed time.
Koch, the only female astronaut on the mission, has strong ties to Ghana, having studied at the University of Ghana. Her association with the country has drawn significant local interest following her achievement.
The Artemis II mission, organised by NASA, marked the first crewed journey to the Moon’s vicinity in more than 50 years. The astronauts travelled to the far side of the Moon and safely returned to Earth after completing key mission objectives.
As a mission specialist aboard the Orion spacecraft, Koch played a critical role in monitoring life support, navigation, and communication systems.
Her participation has been widely celebrated, as she became the first woman to travel into deep space and complete a lunar flyby.
The mission also included commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, who collectively carried out essential tests to support future lunar missions.
