Ghana Seeks $338M Loan for Accra-Tema Motorway and Road Rehabilitation

The Ghanaian government is in the process of securing parliamentary approval for a substantial loan agreement totaling $338 million. This funding is intended to facilitate the extensive reconstruction and expansion of key road networks in the country, primarily focusing on the overhaul of the Accra-Tema motorway and other critical routes.

Patrick Boamah, Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee of Parliament, provided insights during a press briefing in Accra. Boamah outlined the ambitious plans, detailing the comprehensive scope of the proposed infrastructure overhaul. The expansive project encompasses multiple sections, covering a total stretch of 27.7 kilometers.

The prime segment of this project involves the rehabilitation and expansion of the Accra-Tema motorway, which spans 19.5 kilometers. Boamah highlighted the intention to broaden this route to a minimum of 10 lanes, significantly upgrading its capacity and functionality. Additionally, the plan includes a 5.7-kilometer expansion and enhancement of the George Walker Bush highway (N1). Moreover, the existing six-lane Nsawam road is also set for rehabilitation under this substantial initiative.

Boamah emphasized that the project’s execution will involve a carefully planned timeline of approximately 36 months. However, the actual duration may extend depending on the progress of the construction. Furthermore, the Vice Chairman clarified that this ambitious endeavor will be a collaborative effort between Maripoma Limited and the Ghana Infrastructure Fund.

The proposed reconstruction and expansion of these vital roadways are expected to bring about a significant transformation in Ghana’s transportation infrastructure. Pending parliamentary approval, this massive initiative aims to enhance connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and bolster the overall development of the country’s road networks.
