Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China for the construction of a modern market in Aflao, in line with a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 election period.
The grant agreement was signed on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, signed on behalf of the Chinese Government.
According to Mr. Ablakwa, the initiative follows the express instructions of President Mahama and is modeled after the successful Kotokuraba Market project in Cape Coast, which was also funded by a similar Chinese grant during the Mills-Mahama administration.
The new Aflao market is expected to stimulate regional trade, enhance economic activities, and serve as a key link between the Ho and Lomé markets. The facility aims to improve livelihoods and provide a structured commercial hub in one of West Africa’s busiest cross-border trade zones.
“This modern market will not only transform Aflao’s trading landscape but also honor a promise made to the people during the campaign,” Mr. Ablakwa said in a Facebook post.
