Ghana Revenue Authority Refutes Claims of Commissioner-General’s Escape Amidst Controversial Audit

In response to allegations made by North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has categorically denied that Commissioner-General Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah has absconded from the country. Ablakwa claimed that the Commissioner-General fled in connection with the ongoing audit of the agreement between the GRA and Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML).

According to the GRA, Rev. Dr. Owusu-Amoah is currently on a pre-approved six-day leave, which was scheduled a month ago. The GRA clarified that the Commissioner-General will resume duties on Monday, January 15, 2024. During his absence, the GRA assured that all necessary engagements related to the KPMG audit are being diligently addressed by either Rev. Dr. Owusu-Amoah himself or one of the commissioners.

Ablakwa alleged that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assisted Owusu-Amoah in leaving the country with his family less than 24 hours after the president’s January 2, 2024, press statement announcing the KPMG audit. Ablakwa claimed that the entire Owusu-Amoah family departed on January 3, 2024, on a TAP Air Portugal flight, using an ordinary Ghanaian passport issued on June 14, 2019, with the last four digits being 5283.

In response, the GRA condemned Ablakwa’s publication as a “malicious, sensational, misleading, and deliberate attempt” to damage the reputation of the Commissioner-General and the GRA as a whole. The GRA demanded an immediate retraction of the publication from all media platforms and unqualified apologies from Ablakwa and ghextractives.com for what they deemed a misrepresentation of facts.

The GRA reaffirmed its commitment to its mandate of revenue mobilization with integrity, fairness, and professionalism, emphasizing that they are diligently addressing all aspects of the audit during the Commissioner-General’s scheduled leave.
