The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a third case of Mpox in the country, according to its latest situational report. The new case, recorded in February 2025, brings the total number of confirmed infections to three this year.
All cases have so far been classified as mild, with patients undergoing self-isolation. There have been no recorded deaths, and close contacts are being actively monitored and tested.
The GHS report also disclosed that all 16 regions have reported suspected Mpox cases in 2025. The first confirmed case involved a 32-year-old male on antiretroviral therapy who exhibited fever, chills, and pustular lesions. The second case was a 34-year-old male who reported to a health facility with a persistent rash after self-medication failed.
Public health investigations, contact tracing, and community case searches are currently ongoing. The Ghana Infectious Diseases Centre (GIDC) has been designated as the main isolation facility for patients needing inpatient care, while the National Public Health Reference Laboratory (NPHRL) remains responsible for diagnosis.
Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, Deputy Director for Disease Surveillance at the GHS, urged the public to maintain strict personal hygiene and revisit COVID-era habits like frequent hand sanitizing to curb the spread of Mpox.
“We shouldn’t be having outbreaks. Proper hand hygiene is a very effective way of preventing such diseases,” he stated, emphasizing that Mpox spreads through bodily contact.
West Africa continues to report new cases, with Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire experiencing the highest numbers. Ghana’s health authorities say containment efforts remain a priority.
