Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed confidence that the Ghana Premier League (GPL) will soon rise to surpass Europe’s elite football leagues.
Despite ongoing challenges such as low attendance, poor infrastructure, a lack of sponsorship, hooliganism, and stiff competition from European leagues—particularly the English Premier League—Ayariga remains optimistic about the league’s future.
His comments come at a difficult time for the GPL, as the 2024/2025 season has been suspended indefinitely following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley. The devoted fan succumbed to stab wounds after a match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko.
In response to the incident, Asante Kotoko announced their withdrawal from all football-related activities until justice is served.
Despite the setbacks, Ayariga believes that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s 24-hour Economy Policy will revitalize local football, restoring it to prominence.
“Football is going to be a major enabler of the 24-hour economy, and very soon, our local league will replace the European leagues,” he declared on the floor of Parliament while addressing hooliganism and violence in Ghana football.
