The Ghana Police Service has denied accusations that they coerced individuals arrested during Democracy Hub’s recent protest into re-enacting the events at the 37 Intersection in Accra.
The allegations surfaced after reports claimed that some protesters were compelled to recreate their actions from the demonstration held on Sunday, September 22.
In a statement, the police clarified that crime scene reconstruction is a standard investigative procedure used worldwide and that all participants in the re-enactment did so voluntarily.
The police further denied claims that unfamiliar officers were involved in the process, confirming that the detectives handling the re-enactment have been working on the case since its inception.
The Democracy Hub protest, held from September 21 to 23, aimed to call for a ban on illegal mining in Ghana. Over 50 protesters were arrested, with 14 granted bail as of October 7.
The police reiterated that the rights of the accused, including the presence of legal representation during the re-enactment, were upheld.
The police also addressed previous misinformation surrounding the arrests, such as claims of detaining a 12-year-old child and a pregnant woman, urging the public to disregard these false narratives.
