In a recent announcement, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, revealed that the Ghana Police Service can now issue spot fines for road and traffic offenses, thanks to the Ghana.GOV platform. This digital initiative allows officers to inspect insurance and motor infractions in real time.
During a press briefing on Sunday, February 18, the Minister highlighted the government’s achievements in its digitization drive. She emphasized that the police service can now utilize digital solutions by connecting to the Ghana.GOV platform, as well as access databases of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and insurance companies for instant checks on motor infractions.
“This baseline infrastructure provided will support various digital solutions for the benefit of the institution and the nation,” she stated.
The e-government connectivity project, undertaken by the Akufo-Addo government, aims to connect government agencies nationwide for improved communications, access to shared services, integrated functions, and simplified processes. Currently, 951 government agencies have been connected through a modernized, secure fiber optic backbone.
Ghana.GOV serves as a digital service and revenue collection platform, offering a single point of access to government services. It aligns with the government’s vision of digitizing the economy and modernizing payment systems for the benefit of citizens, residents, and visitors. The platform manages all payments and transfers, both electronic and cash, following predefined service flows of each government department and district assembly. It also handles post-payment workflows, customer notifications, feedback, and service ratings, contributing to the government’s goal of creating a cash-lite economy.
