The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has denounced the dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), calling it an abuse of power and a breach of due process by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr. Atiku’s removal followed an impromptu visit by the Minister to the hospital on April 22, triggered by the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, who reportedly died due to the lack of a working ventilator. During the visit, a video capturing a tense exchange between the Minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, Head of the Accident and Emergency Department, went viral, intensifying public scrutiny.
In a statement released on April 23, the GMA condemned both the dismissal and the confrontational treatment of medical staff during the visit. The association described the Minister’s actions as a clear violation of natural justice, insisting that standard administrative procedures were disregarded.
“The dismissal of the TTH CEO and the treatment of medical staff during the visit constitute an affront to due process and an abuse of authority,” the GMA stated. “We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who faced unjust treatment.”
The association further demanded a public apology from both the Health Minister and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, labeling their actions as an “unwarranted attack” on healthcare professionals.
