Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has cautioned Ghanaians against assuming early qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s dominant 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the qualifiers.
Ghana’s win, secured by Thomas Partey’s brace and a goal from Mohammed Kudus—assisted three times by captain Jordan Ayew—puts the team in a strong position in Group I. However, Addo insists that there is still a long road ahead.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Addo warned against complacency:
“We are in a good position [to qualify], but this is also dangerous. Now, I am thinking about how to keep our heads focused [because] the job is really not done,” he stated.
He further emphasized the unpredictable nature of football, noting that Ghana’s lead in the group standings could be narrowed depending on Comoros’ results.
“If anyone thinks we are through, then he’s making a big mistake,” Addo stressed.
With several matches still to be played, Addo urged his players to maintain concentration and avoid overconfidence.
“I have seen a lot of football, a lot of things happening, and we have to stay focused. I am happy, but like I said, the job is really not done,” he reiterated.
The Black Stars will now shift their attention to the next round of qualifiers in June as they continue their quest to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
