President John Dramani Mahama has described Ghana’s deployment of Army engineers to hurricane-hit Jamaica as a demonstration of the country’s strong bilateral relations and commitment to international solidarity.
A contingent made up of eight officers and 45 soldiers is being deployed to assist with shelter construction and reconstruction efforts following the recent hurricane in Jamaica.
Addressing the team during a farewell parade at the Jubilee Lounge of Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday, December 17, President Mahama urged the personnel to serve with professionalism, integrity, and discipline, noting that their conduct would shape Ghana’s image abroad.
He encouraged the engineers to respect local authorities and communities, work as a team, protect one another, and return home safely after the mission.
President Mahama also expressed appreciation to the United States for providing airlift support, which made the deployment possible. He said transportation had initially posed a major challenge until the US government stepped in to assist.
The humanitarian mission is expected to further strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Jamaica while reinforcing Ghana’s role in international disaster response and cooperation.
