Ghana is marking its 68th Independence Day today under the theme “Reflect, Review, Reset,” emphasizing the need to assess the nation’s progress, evaluate its current state, and strategize for a prosperous future.

Unlike previous years, the celebrations are being held on a more modest scale due to economic constraints. The main event is taking place at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, instead of the traditional grand ceremony at Black Star Square.

The program features a Military Guard of Honour, cultural performances by schoolchildren, and a poetry recital by a senior high school student. President John Dramani Mahama is expected to address the nation, highlighting the significance of the day and calling for unity, resilience, and patriotism among Ghanaians.

Government officials have assured the public that the scaled-down celebration does not diminish the importance of Independence Day but rather demonstrates a responsible approach to national spending.

As Ghanaians celebrate nearly seven decades of independence from British colonial rule, they are reminded of the sacrifices made by their forefathers, led by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who declared the nation “free forever” on March 6, 1957. The spirit of independence continues to inspire the country as it tackles present challenges and works toward a brighter future.
