Ghana Card Will Be Ready For 2024 Voting Exercise – National Identification Authority

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has stated that plans are in the works to combine the Voter Identification Card with the Ghana Card, allowing holders of the latter to vote in the General Elections of 2024.

Abdul Ganiwu, a spokeswoman for the Authority, told Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on the Anopa Bfo morning show that the only stumbling block in getting Ghana Card holders to vote is the polling station number.

“There is a lengthy term between now and 2024 to engage the Electoral Commission (EC) so that they can generate such information [polling station numbers] for Ghana Card users.” So, if you’re 18 or older, you can tell the EC where you want to vote, and it’ll be done,” he explained.

According to the NIA, 85 percent of Ghanaians aged 15 and up have registered for the NIA card.

Mr. Ganiwu explained that the technology is designed to automatically detect and update information about those who are under the age of voting so that they can exercise their right to vote.

All identity cards now in use for accessing services in Ghana are scheduled to be replaced by the Ghana Card.

To assist bearers in doing business under the program, it has been incorporated into the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) system.

Telecommunication firms have also been told that all sim card users must register with it, or their numbers will be blocked.
