The leadership of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), led by its President, Mrs. Efua Ghartey, has paid a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama to deliberate on legal reforms, judicial infrastructure, and the relationship between the Bar and government.
The meeting, attended by GBA executives from various regions and former GBA President Sam Okudzeto, focused on pressing concerns within the legal profession and governance in Ghana.
During the discussions, Mrs. Ghartey formally congratulated President Mahama and announced that Ghana will host the Africa Bar Conference from October 19 to 23 in Accra. She extended an official invitation to the President and confirmed that the National Bar Conference would take place in Wa from September 14 to 19.
The GBA also appealed for additional funding to complete court complexes in Wa, Cape Coast, and Tema, emphasizing the importance of judicial infrastructure for efficient justice delivery.
Mrs. Ghartey reaffirmed the Bar’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and expressed its willingness to collaborate with the government in strengthening legal enforcement, environmental protection, and national security.
President Mahama’s Response
President Mahama assured the GBA that his administration remains open to constructive criticism and values its input as a means of enhancing governance.
Acknowledging economic challenges, he highlighted the financial burden of debt repayments and budgetary constraints affecting government institutions, including the judiciary. However, he pledged that his government would work towards uncapping the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), which would provide resources for completing court infrastructure projects.
