Ghana Activates Emergency Response Plan Amid Global Mpox Threat

Ghana has heightened its emergency preparedness and surveillance measures in response to the recent declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Ministry of Health, through the Ghana Health Service, announced the activation of its emergency response plan to address the potential threat posed by the disease within the country.

This move aligns with WHO’s intensified global efforts to combat the spread of Mpox, especially in Africa. On August 14, 2024, WHO raised concerns about the significant increase in Mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and its spread to other African countries, including the recent emergence of a new viral strain outside the DRC.

As of 2024, approximately 2,863 confirmed Mpox cases and 517 deaths have been reported across 13 African countries, with Ghana previously recording 120 cases in 2022 and 8 cases in 2023. Although no cases have been reported in Ghana in 2024, the Ministry remains vigilant, urging the public to take proactive measures to prevent a resurgence of the disease.

The Ministry has issued directives to all relevant agencies to enhance surveillance at Points of Entry, such as airports and border crossings, and within communities nationwide. The Ghana Health Service has also provided technical advice on identifying and managing Mpox symptoms, emphasizing early detection and treatment.

In light of the WHO’s declaration, the Ministry of Health advises the public to utilize healthcare facilities for any symptoms or concerns related to Mpox, underscoring the importance of maintaining vigilance to protect public health.
