The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a press statement, the GFA expressed its disappointment and acknowledged the pain felt by fans across the nation.
“We understand the disappointment and frustration this failure has caused, and we share in the pain and sadness of our beloved fans,” the statement read.
The 2025 AFCON, scheduled to be held in Morocco from December 23, 2025, to January 18, 2026, will feature 24 nations vying for the championship, with Cote d’Ivoire as the defending champions. This will be the first time since 1988 that Morocco hosts the continental tournament.
Ghana’s qualification campaign ended disastrously, with the Black Stars finishing last in Group F, failing to secure a single victory in six matches. Their campaign included a 1-0 home loss to Angola in Kumasi, a goalless draw with Sudan, and a 2-1 defeat to Niger in Accra.
In light of the poor results, the GFA’s Executive Council met on Wednesday, November 20, to discuss the team’s future. Despite heavy criticism, the council decided to retain Otto Addo as head coach, tasking him with rebuilding the team and restoring its reputation.
This marks a difficult chapter for Ghanaian football, as fans look to the GFA and the Black Stars’ management to deliver a turnaround and reclaim the nation’s footballing glory.
