The Ministry of Education has announced a significant policy shift by extending the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) programme to cover students in 60 selected private senior high schools across the country.
Since its launch in 2017 under the Akufo-Addo administration, the Free SHS initiative has exclusively benefitted students in public schools. This latest move marks the first time that private schools have been included in the flagship programme.
According to a statement released by the Ministry on Monday, the inclusion of private institutions is part of efforts to decongest public SHSs and to provide broader access to quality secondary education, irrespective of the type of school a student attends.
Parents and guardians have been urged to confirm the names of the approved private institutions through official channels such as the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), or the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) platforms.
