Tensions in Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, have escalated after the chief’s palace was set on fire on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The attack follows days of violent clashes over a disputed parcel of land allegedly sold by the chief to a private developer. At least 10 people have been killed, with 18 others sustaining injuries since the conflict erupted on Sunday, August 24.

Properties including tractors, motorbikes, and homes have been destroyed. Another palace in Bundi was also torched after the brother of the Bundiwura was reportedly shot, further fueling unrest.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu, and other security chiefs visited affected communities along the Black Volta on Tuesday to assess the situation. A joint police-military team has since been deployed, though the dispersed nature of the settlements has made security operations difficult.

Many residents, particularly women and children, have fled Gbiniyiri and nearby villages for safety. The District Security Council, working with regional authorities, has intensified patrols and is engaging traditional leaders in efforts to restore calm.
