Galamseyers Invade GRIDCo Site in Konongo, Threatening Power Supply

Illegal mining, or galamsey, in Konongo, Ashanti Region, is threatening the power supply to parts of the Ashanti and Eastern Regions as miners have invaded the Northern Ashanti Mines’ concession, which hosts critical GRIDCo substation pylons. This encroachment poses a serious risk to the infrastructure, potentially leading to power outages in Konongo and surrounding areas.

Despite efforts by the mine’s security task force to halt the illegal activities, the miners have persisted, leading to frustration from the mining company. Their attempts to involve local security agencies, including the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) and the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), have not yielded results.

The situation escalated when armed individuals attacked the mine’s security team, injuring personnel and damaging property. With intelligence reports suggesting another planned assault on the mine on Thursday, October 10, the company fears further confrontations as it struggles to protect both its operations and the region’s power infrastructure.
