GACL Shuts Down McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal Over $3 Million Debt

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has closed the McDan Aviation Private Jet Terminal due to an unpaid debt exceeding $3 million. The outstanding amount includes charges for land leases, rentals, and terminal usage fees, which McDan Aviation failed to settle despite being given until Christmas to do so.

This is the second shutdown faced by McDan Aviation. In February 2022, GACL indefinitely barred the company from operating its private jet services at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport (KIA) due to non-compliance with operational requirements.

A letter dated January 31, 2022, signed by Yaw Kwakwa, Managing Director of GACL, cited McDan Aviation’s failure to meet the terms for using the terminal as a private jet facility. The letter, copied to several high-ranking officials, including the Secretary to the President and the Minister of Transport, also directed McDan Aviation to hand over the keys for a joint inventory by the close of business that day.

McDan Aviation launched its private jet terminal and services on January 28, 2022, but the event was boycotted by key aviation sector stakeholders, including Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, the Minister of Transport, and officials from GACL. Concerns were raised over the company’s operational practices.

Despite warnings and the previous shutdown, McDan Aviation’s inability to clear its debts has led to the latest closure. This decision underscores GACL’s stance on ensuring compliance with financial and operational regulations in the aviation sector.
