The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that it is eagerly awaiting the release of funds from the government to facilitate the marking and timely release of results for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).
Mr. John K. Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the prompt disbursement of funds is crucial to expedite the examination result processing procedures.
Initially, the government had allocated GHC10.5 million to WAEC to cover the expenses related to BECE. This allocation has been utilized for conducting the examinations. However, with the exams now concluded, WAEC anticipates the release of additional funding to cover the marking process and subsequent result publication.
Mr. Kapi disclosed that WAEC officials met with the Minister of Education on September 25, 2023, during which the Minister acknowledged that the allocated funds might not be sufficient for the entire process. Consequently, the Chief Director was instructed to work on securing additional funding.
As of now, WAEC has not received any funds, and this situation raises concerns regarding the Council’s ability to complete the marking process and pay the 22,000 examiners hired for the task.
Mr. Kapi emphasized that the release of the examination results is contingent on the government’s provision of the necessary funds. He mentioned that WAEC is targeting the last week of October 2023 for the release of BECE results. Once the coordination of examiners is completed between October 4 and 7, marking for the examinations will commence on October 9, 2023.
In conclusion, WAEC is eagerly awaiting the government’s financial support to ensure the smooth and timely release of results for both WASSCE and BECE, with hopes that the government will honor its commitment to provide the necessary funds for this critical educational process.
