Bernard Mornah, the unsuccessful Presidential Candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the 2024 general elections, has congratulated John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s President-elect, on his decisive victory.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, declared Mr. Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner, securing 56.55% of the valid votes cast (6,328,397 votes) in 267 out of 276 constituencies. His closest competitor, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 41.61% (4,657,304 votes).
Speaking to the media in Sankana, Nadowli-Kaleo District, Mr. Mornah highlighted the importance of fulfilling the “mouth-watering” campaign promises that contributed to Mr. Mahama’s victory. Among these pledges were recovering misappropriated funds, abolishing unpopular taxes such as the betting tax and E-levy, and delivering transparent governance.
“We want to remind them that it’s these promises the people of Ghana took seriously, and we expect that they will manifest them as they are in government,” Mornah emphasized.
He commended Dr. Bawumia for graciously conceding defeat early, which helped to ease tensions and prevent potential violence. “His quick acceptance and concession of defeat to John Dramani Mahama calmed tensions and probably took the nation away from the brink of people’s anger,” he noted, adding that this act exemplifies Ghana’s maturing democracy.
Mr. Mornah also expressed gratitude to the PNC fraternity for their support of the NDC, especially following the EC’s disqualification of the PNC from the presidential race. He expressed optimism that Mr. Mahama’s administration would alleviate the economic hardships facing Ghanaians.
“Democracy in Ghana has matured,” Mornah concluded, urging the incoming administration to honor its promises and deliver good governance.
