Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has raised concerns about the silence of teacher unions and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) regarding allegations of expired rice being supplied to Senior High Schools (SHSs).
Ablakwa accused Lamens Investment Africa Limited and the National Food Buffer Stock Company of distributing 22,000 bags of repackaged expired rice to SHSs in February 2024. He expressed disappointment over the lack of response from CHASS and teacher unions, stating that their silence undermines public confidence in their oversight roles.
“Parents entrust schools to protect their children, but reports of heads accepting contaminated food without expiry dates are troubling. CHASS and the heads appear complicit, and they owe an explanation,” Ablakwa stated.
The Minority in Parliament has called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent such incidents from recurring, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this matter to safeguard student welfare.
