Francis Sosu Questions Justice System After Jail Term for Preacher Who Vandalized Cars at Parliament

Madina Member of Parliament and Human Rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, has expressed concern over the case of 33-year-old preacher Christopher Sorkpa, who was jailed for vandalizing vehicles at Parliament House.

The incident occurred on December 18, 2024, when Sorkpa and his accomplice, Wisdom Ahli, sneaked into Parliament’s car park. Using an earth chisel hidden in a handbag, Sorkpa damaged the windscreens of five vehicles, including Toyota V8s, Toyota Camry saloons, and a Rav 4 belonging to MPs and parliamentary staff.

Sorkpa claimed that “God asked him to do so,” while Ahli reportedly encouraged him during the act. Both men were arrested and admitted to the offense in caution statements witnessed independently.

During his court appearance on December 20, 2024, Sorkpa pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy and causing unlawful damage. He was sentenced by Judge Samuel Bright Asiedu, while Ahli, who faces the same charges, was remanded into custody pending amendments to his charges.

Sosu, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), criticized the handling of the case, questioning whether Sorkpa was of sound mind at the time of the offense. He argued that suspects showing signs of irrational behavior should undergo medical evaluation before legal proceedings.

“A person who is not compos mentis cannot plead to an offense, much less plead guilty,” Sosu remarked, citing the 2015 case of Charles Antwi as a similar failure in the justice system.

Sosu also raised concerns about the absence of legal representation for Sorkpa, calling for a review of how cases involving possible mental health issues are handled. Ahli’s case has been adjourned to January 9, 2025.
